Text tools

The text category has six tools for editing, comparing and searching text. All of them run in the browser.

Path: /tools/text/text-tools

A single text area with a set of small operations on it.

  • Count occurrences of a word or pattern, matching case or not, anywhere or as whole words only, as plain text or as a regular expression.
  • Find and replace, with the same case and plain-text or regular-expression options.
  • Case converter: lower case, UPPER CASE, Title Case, Sentence case, camelCase, PascalCase, snake_case, kebab-case, CONSTANT_CASE and dot.case.
  • Paste, copy, download as a .txt file and clear (with undo).

Path: /tools/text/markdown

A Markdown editor with a live preview.

  • Write, Split and Preview views, with an option to scroll the preview with the editor.
  • A formatting toolbar: heading, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, quote, bulleted, numbered and task lists, link, image, code block, table and horizontal rule. Keyboard shortcuts are shown in the button tooltips.
  • Format tables lines up the columns of every table. A table of contents can be inserted at the cursor.
  • An outline panel, find, and a status line showing the cursor position and reading time.
  • Start a new document blank or from a template, open a .md or text file, and save as a .md file.
  • Export the preview as HTML, rich text or PDF.

Path: /tools/text/diff

Compares two texts side by side. Its page is titled Text Compare.

  • Paste or type the original and changed text, or open files into either panel. A swap button exchanges the panels.
  • Smart compare lines the texts up first, so an added or removed line does not mark every later line as changed. Strict compare goes strictly line by line.
  • Options to ignore letter case and spaces at line ends, to scroll or wrap long lines, and to scroll the panels together or separately.
  • Jump to the previous or next difference.

Path: /tools/text/regex-tester

Tries a regular expression against test text.

  • Options: case matching, all matches or the first only, whether ^ and $ match the whole text or each line, whether the dot matches a newline, and Unicode (u) or Unicode sets (v) modes.
  • Views for Matches, Replace and Split. The replacement field accepts $1, $<name> and $&.
  • Copy the pattern, or copy the results as plain text or JSON.
  • A syntax reference and a loadable example.

Path: /tools/text/reference

A searchable reference of commands. Describe a task or type part of a command, and filter by category. Open all or close all shows or hides the details, and Copy commands copies every command shown, one per line. The page notes that it is reference only: nothing on it runs.

Path: /tools/text/merge

Builds a merged file from the lines of two files.

  • Load or paste file A and file B. Lines that differ between the files are tinted.
  • Click a line, or press Space, to pick it. Double-click it, or press Enter, to add it to the result. Arrow keys move between lines. Add picked adds the picked lines.
  • Reorder result lines by dragging them or using the arrows, and add blank lines.
  • Choose the line ending (LF or CRLF) and whether the result ends with a line break.
  • Swap A and B, copy the result or download it.
