Data tools

The data category has seven tools for working with structured text, databases, logs and files. All of them run in the browser.

Path: /tools/data/notepad

A multi-note editor for JSON, XML, YAML and other text. Notes open as tabs, and you can split the window into up to three panes.

  • Format and Minify a note (JSON, XML and YAML), with a choice of tab, 2-space or 4-space indent.
  • Clean repairs pasted JSON: escaped quotes, JSON saved as a string, text around it, comments, trailing commas, single or curly quotes and Python values.
  • Convert the current note to a new JSON, XML or YAML note.
  • Inspect JSON, XML or YAML as a tree, a table or a schema check. The tree has a JSONPath query and a key and value filter. The table can be copied as CSV, with an option that makes cells safe for spreadsheets. A schema can be generated from the document, edited, and used to check it.
  • Find and replace, go to line, fold and unfold all, line wrap, and a syntax menu.
  • Open files by dropping them on the page, save a note or all notes (several notes save as one zip), and open a note in a new window.

Path: /tools/data/sql

Runs SQLite (WebAssembly) in a worker. The database lives in the page until you save it.

  • Separate Setup and Query scripts, with Run, Run both and Stop. With text selected, only the selection runs. Stop returns the database to how it was before the run.
  • Format the SQL.
  • A dialect choice of SQLite or Oracle (on SQLite). The Oracle option rewrites common Oracle SQL, such as DUAL, SYSDATE, ROWNUM, FETCH FIRST, sequences, NVL, DECODE and TO_CHAR, so it runs on SQLite.
  • A Database panel listing tables, and a Browse view with a row filter and page sizes of 50, 100 or 500 rows.
  • Open a SQLite database file (.sqlite, .db) and save the database as a .sqlite file. Clear database removes every table and row but keeps the setup script.
  • Results and Messages panes.

Path: /tools/data/schema

A canvas for designing database tables. Add tables, then drag from the dot beside a column to another column to link them.

  • Import SQL from CREATE TABLE statements or a dump from PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle or SQLite. Anything that is not a table or a link is left out, and the SQL is never run.
  • A Details panel with a Design view and a SQL view. The SQL is generated for SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL / MariaDB, SQL Server or Oracle. It can be copied or saved as a .sql file.
  • Tidy lays the tables out again so that links cross as little as possible.
  • Save the schema as a .json file and open it again later, or save the canvas as an .svg picture.
  • Open in SQL sends the schema to the SQL Workspace as its setup script.
  • Zoom controls, a Fit button, and an example schema to try.
  • The schema is saved in this browser.

Path: /tools/data/log-analyzer

Reads log files or pasted log text and summarises them. The format is detected for you, stack traces stay with the line that caused them, and repeating messages are grouped.

  • Reads JSON lines, Java / log4j, nginx / Apache, syslog, logfmt, Docker, Python and plain text. Files can be plain or .gz, and you can open several at once.
  • A Filters panel with a summary of the log, levels (with an errors-only option), sources and hidden patterns.
  • Search the log, optionally as a regular expression and optionally case-sensitive.
  • A chart of entries over time and a list of things to check.
  • Views for Entries, Patterns, Fields and Insights, with sort options for patterns.
  • A sample log to try, Export to save or copy what the filters show, and a written Report.

Path: /tools/data/datasize

Converts between data sizes and between number bases. Its page is titled Size & Base Converter.

  • Enter a value and a unit to see it in other units. Decimal units are powers of 1000 (KB, MB) and binary units are powers of 1024 (KiB, MiB). A switch changes between the two.
  • Show a number in every base, with a width of unbounded, 8, 16, 32 or 64 bits, unsigned or signed (two’s complement).
  • An Any base field to enter a value in a base of your choice.
  • Copy every size, or the number in every base.

Path: /tools/data/payloads

Builds test files of a size you choose, for testing uploads and APIs. Its page is titled Test Payloads.

  • File types: a PDF or PNG that opens as a real document or image, plain text, JSON, CSV or raw binary.
  • Contents that are the same sample every time, or different made-up content every time. The file name can follow a pattern or be random.
  • Size presets up to 10 MiB, or a custom size in bytes, KB, KiB, MB or MiB.
  • Choose whether the size is measured on the file itself or on its Base64 text, which is what an API receives.
  • Padding is either random bytes, which do not compress, or repeating text, which compresses to almost nothing.
  • Copy the result as Base64 or as a data: URI, or download the file or the Base64 text as a .txt file.

Path: /tools/data/csv

A table editor for CSV and TSV files.

  • Open a file, paste from the clipboard, or start a new table. Undo and redo are available.
  • Add or delete rows and columns, and filter rows.
  • It reads CSV, TSV, and pipe or semicolon separated files, in UTF-8, UTF-16, Windows-1252 and Windows-1256. The encoding, byte order mark, delimiter and line ending are detected and can be changed, and the file is saved back the way you choose.
  • Save options: delimiter (auto, comma, semicolon, tab or pipe), line ending (LF, CRLF or CR), whether the first row is a header, and quoting (where needed or every field).
  • A Formulas option: cells that begin with =, +, - or @ run as formulas when a file is opened in a spreadsheet. Defuse saves them with a leading ' so they stay text.
  • Save the table as a CSV file or copy it as CSV. The table you are editing is kept in this browser until you clear it in Settings.
